Cake Smash Tips & Tricks // Chelmsford, MA Family Photographer

April 8, 2017

GIVE ME ALL THE CAKE! Yes, I do love cake, cupcakes, and pastries of all sorts. I never had much of a sweet tooth until I was pregnant with “Mr. Rex.” From that point on I can’t get enough of all the sweets….bad problem to have, but oh so delicious.

Here are some tips & tricks if you’re planning a cake smash session with you’re little one.

  1. Pick a Theme or Style. Maybe you have extra party decorations to use or some fun props. This is the time to use them. Balloons are fun, too!
  2. Fresh Cake is Best. Be sure to get a fresh cake. If freezing you cake, set it out on the counter for a few hours, so it’s not cold. Babies usually like room temperature cake and its easier to dig into!baby-cake-smash-frosting-messy-one-year-old
  3. Outside is a great option, too! I have done a few outdoor cake smashes, the clean up is a bit easier and the lighting is always great! This little guy did a “donut smash” instead – so much fun!!!baby-girl-tutu-holding-hands-one-year
  4. Do family photos first. Before the cake smash I love getting some photos of your little one in honor of this milestone. We’ll do family photos and it gives him or her time to warm up in front of the camerafamily-with-one-year-old-girl.
  5. Be ready for a big clean up. As soon as we get started, plan to get a bath running too! Baby will be messy and sticky. This is another reason doing it at home is a great idea! If we do the session outside bring lots of wipes and a change of clothing.
  6.   I will bring a white backdrop with me if you choose. This can make your home into a studio in a simple way!
