This summer I had the joy of being with my family! We were so thankful to be together and on a warm summer night, we captured our annual family photos. Every year the challenge of what to wear for large group family photos presents it self. This year, I send out color inspiration and purchased matching tops for some of the kids to be sure we all coordinated perfectly. It took only a little effort, and the results made for perfect family photos.
I am so happy to share with you MY FAMILY; my parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews all looking picture perfect.
If you’re wondering what to wear for Large Group family photos, I hope this blog post helps.
Here are my top three tips for Large Group Family photo outfits:
1. Choose a color scheme: We searched for “blue and teal” color inspiration online. With so many blue and green-eyed people we know that blue’s and greens look best on our family. To find the perfect accent color I went to the internet and found this mood board. Notice it doesn’t show clothing, just a color tone and vibe we all liked. We obviously didn’t stick to it exactly, but it was the initial inspiration for theme. You can do the same thing, start collecting images that you just love the color of and then find clothing to match that aesthetic.
2. Purchase a few matching items: I chose to match all the young boys. This really helped pull together the look. I bought all of their family photo outfits at Old Navy. Because there are six young boys, their matching shirts really pull the whole group together.
3. Think top & bottom: Don’t just match on top, be sure to coordinate the lower half of the body too. You don’t want everyone in white pants, that would pull too much focus to the bottom half of your images. You also don’t want everyone in dark pants for the same reason. Mix and Match dark and light bottoms.
Bonus Tips: Lay out all the outfits the night before to be sure that everyone is “coordinated”. All “blues” don’t always match, the same for whites and ivory. Be prepared with a backup outfit or top if necessary. If you don’t all have shoes that coordinate, go with bare feet or simple flip-flops like most of us did! I was so busy setting up the tripod that I forgot my shoes in these images!

As you can see my family got two clicks, and they are both blurry…the story of a photographer having amatuers capturing our pics! That is why I hire a photographer a few times a year to actually photograph my family. See my 2020 Family Photo session by a pro here.
