If you’re planning family photos this winter in the Boston area, look no further to find out advice on what to wear! The days of light washed denim jeans and crisp white tops for all are long gone. And trust me, it’s a good thing! Do you sometimes see a photo I post and think “wow that’s so beautiful, I hope my photos turn out great too!” There’s a lot more to capturing that “picture perfect” photo than just the click of a camera. If you take the time to prep those outfits while I’m scouting out location and watching the weather forecast, we can make those “photo shoot dreams” come true!
“Summery dresses and bare feet on the beach are easy. Now what do I wear when the temps drop seemingly overnight??” The idea of textures and layers of fall and winter fabrics can actually give your photos the warm, deep look you desire. And I’ll say it again, don’t be afraid of color!
Thornton Family:
The Thornton’s really stepped up their fashion game for this year’s session, and I was loving it! They nailed this theme and are a great example of how mixing and matching can give you that perfect look. You’ll notice each family member has some denim on, but the girls are rocking those denim dresses to mix it up a bit (with tights to keep warm- very smart!). Mom added in some pops of yellow and red (even some pattern in the red flannel), and a couple vests. These vests have great texture which adds some extra depth and interest to the look. The red bow on their little sister is like the perfect cherry on top- it brings those colors all together! Great job Thornton family!
Dunlea Family:
I always get excited to see what the Dunlea’s have planned for their outfits! I had to include a throwback photo to last year just to prove this family is always stylin’. This is a great example of how getting a little more dressed up than usual can be great for photo shoots. The combo of this adorable plaid Christmas dress and perfect flower crown and suit with a velvet jacket gives a classic feel with a modern twist. And yes, even this pup is dressed to impress!
Here are some tips about the all important accessories for your family photos:
– Bring hats, scarfs and gloves for kids. Keeping them warm will keep them happy which will give me the smiles I need for your photos! Find a cute matching set, and skip the big logos and cartoon characters some hats will be plastered with. Patterns, textures and colors are great though!
– Bring a blanket or wrap. We can use this for two things- a cute photo of your family wrapped up in a tight hug all snuggled up together, and in between shots to keep the kids (and mom!) all little warmer
– Jealous of those Pinterest-worthy flower crowns and bouquets you’ve been seeing? I can help with that! I work directly with some amazing florists, and we can plan ahead to add anything you want to your session. Mom and the girls with matching flower crowns- yes please!
– SHOES! You all know I love shoes, but a lot of people don’t realize how important they are when planning your outfits. Stylish boots always give off those fall vibes and looks great in photos. Keep it comfortable, but dress it up a bit. No light up sneakers for the kiddos for just today, okay? 😉
See photos of my family in the winter, on a cold blustery February Day. These photos taken by Rachel Serb Photography are some of my favorites of our crew. We have multiple layers and brought a blanket to warm up between shots. The sunshine helped, but it was only 18 degrees!
